two months into the adult life

All things are difficult before they are easy.

Entering Corporate Life

It's been 2 months since I started my job1 as a fresh graduate. Safe to say that I'm still surviving thus far!

There are so many things to learn, so many processes to know, so many pieces of information for me to understand. I'm part of a team that is streamlining any operation possible, very meaningful work.

Reflecting on the past two months, these are some key things that I've learned:

1. Learning Quick

It is so important that I am quick on my feet, to keep up with current processes and to know the ins and outs of the project. Eventually I will be taking over this project, so I have to step up and start owning it, treating this project as my baby.

The current project involves multiple stakeholders, from various teams and across various regions, so this is great exposure for me to understand how the business works. It's fascinating to see how different departments interconnect and contribute to the overall company goals.

At the same time, it has also given me exposure to the differences between markets as a result of their culture. It was really an eye-opener for me. For instance, I've noticed how communication styles and decision-making processes can vary significantly from one region to another, which has broadened my perspective on global business operations.

2. Building Relationships

It's also important to maintain great relationships with colleagues. I am in the same place as them for 8 hours a day, so it would make me happier to have one more person to talk to, to joke with, and to laugh with.

I've found that small gestures go a long way in building these connections. Whether it's remembering someone's coffee order or asking about their weekend, these little interactions help create a more positive and collaborative work environment.

3. Enjoying the Little Things

One aspect of corporate life that I've come to appreciate is the importance of taking breaks and enjoying the small moments throughout the day. Lunch hours have become a highlight, offering a chance to recharge and socialize with colleagues outside of work discussions.

I've also discovered the joy of short coffee breaks. These brief pauses not only provide a much-needed caffeine boost but also offer opportunities for informal chats with coworkers. It's during these casual conversations that I often gain valuable insights into the company culture and pick up useful tips about navigating corporate life.

4. Personal Growth Outside of Work

I recently bought an e-reader!2 It's a little expensive, but I got it on sale during the 9.25 sale from Shopee. My goal is to start cultivating the habit of reading more regularly, both for professional growth and personal enjoyment.

Currently, I'm reading "Surrounded by Idiots" by Thomas Erikson. It's an intriguing book about understanding different personality types and improving communication in various settings, including the workplace. I'm finding it particularly relevant as I navigate my new corporate environment and interact with diverse colleagues.

This reading habit is not only helping me unwind after work but also providing me with new perspectives and ideas that I can potentially apply in my professional life. It's a reminder that growth doesn't stop when I leave the office – there's always more to learn and explore.

As I continue on this journey of corporate life, I'm excited to see how these experiences and lessons will shape my career path. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities, and I'm determined to make the most of them all.
